Student activities

Co-curricular activities are those which complement Holy Spirit's regular curriculum. Some of them take place at school within the ordinary school day; others occur during non-school times in venues outside the school.

Field trips. Although field trips are an important part of education, they are a privilege, not an absolute right. A student who fails to meet academic and behavior requirements can be denied participation in a field trip. On these trips, students must remember that they represent their school and their families. Information will be sent to parents, whose written permission must be obtained for each field trip.

Blank permission forms may be found on this website in the event a child forgets to bring a permission slip home. Please call the school office for the necessary information to complete the form.

Foreign language classes. Our Home and School Association sponsors two sessions of foreign language classes each academic year. Classes meet weekly for 30 minutes after school for 8 to 10 times each session. Students are responsible for the class fee. Notices are sent home regarding registration for each session. These classes are in addition to the Spanish instruction offered in the classroom.

Geography bee. The classroom competition for the school level of the National Geographic Society's Geography Bee is held in grades 4 through 8. Each classroom sends the top two winners to the school competition in February. The winner of the school bee takes a written test to qualify for the state competition.

MCTM Math Competition. Students in grades 7 and 8 have an opportunity to participate in the annual Math Competition sponsored by the Montana Council of Teachers of Mathematics held in March. Students select several areas of math in which to compete during the day-long competition. Interested students are prepared for this event with sample tests and competition problems.

Optimist Oratorical Contest. Each year, generally in the spring, students in grades 6-8 are invited to participate in an oratorical contest sponsored by a local Optimist Club. Students write and present the speeches on a given topic. Holy Spirit staff help coach the participants.

Ski Days. As part of their health enhancement curriculum, students take part in two ski days in mid-winter. A lesson each day is required, regardless of the ability of the student.

Spelling beeAll 4-8 graders participate in a classroom spelling bee in February. Winners from each classroom then participate in the school spelling bee. The top two winners at the school spelling bee take part in the Cascade County spelling bee, with the opportunity to advance to state and national competitions.
